Regular schedule

The club meets for breakfast at 9:30 on the first Saturday of each month, currently at Doc's Marina Grill at the foot of Madison. Spouses, children, newcomers and lapsed hams are welcome. We are reasonably well-behaved and have not yet been ejected by the management.

Kitsap ACS/RACES/ARES conducts a 2m check-in every Sunday evening at 7:30 on their 145.43 repeater. On the first Sunday of each month we segue into a simplex check-in using the Island simplex frequency 147.54.

Requests for Volunteers

We are often asked to help out at events. Sometimes organizations need people on an ongoing basis. Here are some current and upcoming opportunities to get involved:
Life Cycle Bremerton - June 2nd
To volunteer, contact Peter: KB7TGF at ARRL dot net or at (360) 697-2183.
Again this year, communications assistance and SAG vehicle support has been requested for the Life Cycle Bremerton bicycle event to be held on Saturday, June 2nd. The event which runs from 0700-1630 is in support of the Bremerton Schools Foundation which supports youth programs.

There will be 5 rest stops and 5 courses running from Port Orchard to Poulsbo. The main hub and start/finish is Evergreen Park, Bremerton. Radio operators are needed at all rest stops and SAG vehicle drivers are needed to monitor the courses. T-shirts will be provided for all volunteers. Since this event is only two weeks away, please let Peter know as soon as possible if you can assist.
Fun Fair at the Fire Station - June 16th
This is one of our better chances to interact with the public and drag unsuspecting civilians over to the Dark Side. Our fearless president (no, not Obama; our fearless *club* president) will set up the table and the club go-box, to impress people with blinking lights. We could use a couple others to help staff the booth, answer questions, etc. Help kids talk to operators all the way on the other side of the parking lot! They feed us for free so it doesn't get much better than that, unless you get lucky and dunk the Chief.

The Kiwanis Summer Challenge - August 26th

They have added a third route, making a very complicated event and giving us a huge amount of road to monitor. We're going to need all the volunteers we can find.

This is an all-day bike rally, so we mostly need people in vehicles but we will also need some help staffing the base station.

SET June 5th and 6th
We have a large exercise coming June 5th and 6th called Evergreen Earthquake.
Hams will be involved on the morning of the 5th, and we need to staff the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) (now at Madison, not City Hall). We understand we will be given injects (drill event data) at that time.

This is not a regular EOC-EOC drill, but we don't yet know at what level the drill is being organized.

This is a Tuesday which is bad for most of us. If you can possibly participate, please let us know.

Events

Rotary Auction - Saturday preceding July 4th

The Bainbridge Island Rotary Club conducts what is possibly the largest single-seller garage sale in the world, raising over $300,000 in recent years. You have to see it to believe it. For more information, visit the Rotary site. But for a really great map, you have to come to us.

We are always interested in help from visiting hams. We have duties that involve a lot of walking with HTs, but we also have roles that don't demand any walking. It's typically hot, and dehydration is a concern to hams and the entire crowd. If you're interested, contact us. Volunteers (including the hams) get fed, which is a plus.

Field Day - last weekend in June

What happens when amateur radio operators all over the country step away from the power grid, maybe go camping, and string enough wire between tree-tops to make a safety net for falling giants? Field Day! Field Day is a contest in which the goal is to contact as many stations in as many places over as many frequencies as possible, all without using utility-supplied power. It's great fun, of course, and also helps us prepare to serve in emergencies when the power is knocked out. Last year and this year Field Day falls on a different weekend than the Rotary Auction, so we're delighted to be able to participate.

Kiwanis Summer Challenge - August 26

Chilly Hilly comes but once a year - so, to double your cycling pleasure, the Kiwanis Club has begun offering a cycling event half a year later. In Summer! When it's warm! (Well, warm relative to February, anyway.)

Chilly Hilly - February

In February of each year we provide communication and logistical aid to the Chilly Hilly bicycle rally, which is conducted by the Cascade Bicycle Club. This event draws 4000 riders or more for a circuit of the island.

We are interested in help from visiting hams on this one, too. This is a highly mobile event, and hams typically need a vehicle and a mobile radio. An HT is not sufficient due to the island hilly layout.

MSwalk - April

This is a small event benefitting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. It takes a half dozen hams with either vehicles or on bikes with HTs. They feed us, too.

Simulated Emergency Tests

From time to time we have run Simulated Emergency Tests (SETs) on the island, and we participate in county- and state-wide SETs as well. The software we have used for home-grown SETs is available free.
